Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field, offering low-cost system solutions based on the principle of homogenizing system components, eliminating at least one material component. This, in turn, leads to a decrease in the number of interconnects between the mechanical parts and the next digital bus. Before the evolution of Information technology and microprocessor embedded mechanical systems, Mechatronics was simple and mainly focused on servo-technology, like servo valves & AC/DC servo motors etc.

Nowadays, mechanical systems are reliable, accurate and have a very high efficiency especially in automobiles with electronic engine controls technology that enabled the on-impact triggering of airbags. The number of interconnects necessary to link a motor, or sensor, to the next digital bus decreases, as the smartness of the devices increases.

Mechatronics for Future:

Automation is the future of engineering and it all begins here at the Centre of Excellence in Mechatronics. It aims to improve the functionality of technical systems and the creation of new concepts of machinery and equipment with built-in artificial intelligence. To prepare industry-ready engineers for the future, the centre has the right blend of faculty members having expertise in Mechanical, Electronics and Mechatronics engineering.

The integration of mechanical processes and microelectronics towards mechatronic systems opens new possibilities as well for the design of mechanical components as for automatic functions. Besides the basic energy flow in the mechanical system, an information flow in the electronic system enables a variety of automatic functions.

This leads to mechatronic systems which consist of mechanics (mechanical engineering, precision mechanics) and coupled processes (e.g. thermal, electrical) information technology (systems theory, automation, communication, software design, and artificial intelligence).

MECHATRONIC SYSTEM IN AUTOMOBILE:

The integration of electronics into automotive systems plays an important role in the present development.

  • Car engine management

Car engine management system consists of many electronic control systems involving microcontrollers, the engine control system being one, it aims to control the amount of fuel to be injected into each cylinder, ignition, Engine revolution limit, variable cam timing and gear controls. The system consists of sensors supplying, after suitable signal conditioning, the input signals to the microcontroller and providing output signals via drivers to actuate actuators.

  • Electronic stability control

This control system uses sophisticated sensors, the car central computer and mechanical actions for a safe drive. The electronic stability control system doesn’t work by itself, it also uses the cars other safety and regulatory devices, to correct problems before they get into accidents. It also includes

  1. Yaw control sensor
  2. Wheel speed sensors
  3. Steering angle sensors
  4. Rotational speed sensors
  • Cruise control acceleration and deceleration

The cruise control system controls the speed of a car by adjusting the throttle position. The throttle valve controls the power and speed of the engine by limiting how much air the engine takes in.

  • Airbag Inflation

The goal of an airbag is to inflate rapidly during automobile collisions and prevent the passengers from striking interior objects. There are three parts to an airbag that helps to achieve its function. Advance systems have solid-state crash sensors that contain a piezoelectric crystal or a micromachined accelerometer, a device used to measure acceleration or vibration shock built into a microchip that produces an electrical signal when jolted.

  • Power door locks

In this system, the door lock/unlock switch sends power to the actuators that unlock the door.

In the current scenario of technical advancement, those who can handle multiple disciplines of engineering is preferred rather than one who sticks to a branch by itself. Hence, Mechatronics being an integrated new generation course has wide potential within the country and abroad. A career in mechatronics engineering is ideal for those who like to broaden their knowledge in engineering. There is almost no product in the world that is solely electronic, electrical or mechanical.

This means that each discipline is blended and there is a growing demand for those specializing in this interdisciplinary branch of engineering. A degree in mechatronics can lead to management positions, including project management. Workplaces range from laboratories and processing plants to engineering design offices. Mechatronics specialists work in the fields of cyber security, telecommunications, computer science, automotive engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and consumer products and packaging.
